There are two different versions of this ep: a red version which has Gira doing vocals on the cover track, and a black version which features Jarboe(I bet you can't guess which one this is.) Released back in the year 1988, this is merely another gem in the jewel encrusted bracelet that is the Swans discography. Could that have been a gayer comparison? Yes, yes it could have.

Acid Bath is a legendary sludge band from where else, New Orleans. They were active from '91 to '97, putting out two full lengths, only breaking up due to the death of their bass player, Andie Pitre, in a car crash. Hymns.. was the demo the group put out before their first release, When the Kite String Pops. It is essentially a demo of Kite String as all of the songs from Hymns.. would later be re-recorded(or re-mastered?) for that album.

Spacemen 3 was a British space/post/psych/shoegaze/yougettheidea band active for most of the '80s to the early '90s. This album, released in '90, is more of a compilation album; the first 7 tracks comprise the demo of songs off of their first album, Sound of Confusion, which members Pete Kemeber and Jason Pierce both stated were superior to the actual album recordings, with the remaining seven being alternate versions of the rest of the songs. I would describe them as a more minimalistic Jesus and Mary Chain; now you have to listen to it.

Winter is one of the pioneering bands of the death/doom genre. What is death/doom...what the fuck does it sound like. They only put out two records; the first being their full length Into Darkness in '90, and the Eternal Frost EP in '94. Both were later re-issued by Nuclear Blast as one record. I would describe them as a lo-fi, pop-punkish type of band, drawing influences from the aforementioned groups. When someone uses the word raging to describe music, my mind instantly goes to one of my favorite current bands, Martyrdod. This split came out in 2004 right before they released their second full length, In Extremis. It is exactly what you would expect from the Swedes, two tracks of pure raging, blackened crust. The other band Sunday Morning Einsteins is alright. I'm not really familiar with them, but they came off as generic d-beat/crust, and the vocals irritated me for some reason, maybe I'm just failing to realize their greatness and am in need of some self righteous music snob to point it out via the internet. Whatevs.

Born Dead Icons, hailing form Quebec, play dark/melodic d-beat in the vein of From Ashes Rise/Tragedy; throw in some crusty sprinkles on top and I'm sold. It's nothing to original but definitely worth checking if you are a fan of the genre, and you like hearing your d-beat on the slower side of things. The band broke up in '07, releasing this record, their first lp, in 2000.

We shall file this record along with side B of Family Man under the title of experimental Flag. It's all instrumental and fairly slow as with most of the band's later recordings, yet it is still better than most of the shit that is released today(and most of Black Flag's later discog as well, I said it). It plays more like a 30 minute long jam session, and sounds a lot like they had been listening to only Minutemen records before they went into the studio(nothing wrong with that of course). The title apparently has several meanings: one take on it was that Gregg Gin really enjoyed his weed...and who can blame him, the other being that they were trying to even more so alienate their fans who didn't care for the experimental nature that the band was taking. This is definitely Black Flag Mk. 2.

Other than being one of the first bands to really develop the crust punk sound, and the fact that their guitar player went schizo in an airport, and the fact that they really don't seem to care for our lord and savior jesus christ, Amebix happen to be one of my favorite bands. Who's the Enemy('82) and No Sanctuary('84) are the bands first two releases, and like the Winter EP, really have more in common with the likes of Joy Division and Killing Joke than their later, more metal tinged, full lengths. I believe that Jello Biafra re-released No Sanctuary on his label fairly recently as a full length with both of these EP's and the Winter EP, BUT THIS ISN'T IT.

Apparently this band is supposed to be re-uniting for what looks like one show on February 21, so to everyone who lives in Oregon...fuck you. Featuring members from all sorts of bands you have probably heard of(Tragedy, World Burns to Death, Deathreat, Remains of the Day, etc)and carrying through with the similar darkened/d-beat hardcore sound, this band rips. I'm not gonna lie, I used to be obsessed with this band several years ago and I haven't really listened to them that much since then. This isn't actually a full discography either, but rather something that was released back in 2000 and is essentially their album Concrete and Steel with a few extra songs(I'm not sure which ep's are on this).

Usually when someone uses the word emo or emocore to describe how a band sounds, I get upset. Moss Icon is an exception to this rule. Them, along with a handful of other bands, came from what was known as the Revolution Summer. Basically, in the summer of 85, a bunch of DC bands pretty much invented the post-hardcore/emo genre. This is the second release by this band, all though it was also released as the Hate In Me 7", which is the first track on this record. I plan on posting more from this band later in days to come, so you better fucking like them. You should also check out Embrace, another seminal band from the same time period, with a similar sound.

This album is 15 years old, hard to imagine really. Not that I bought this back in '95 when it came out...I was only 8. Integrity is still one of the greatest hardcore bands to have ever existed(since the '90s anyways)regardless of my current taste in music, or however "vocal test" Dwid can be, this record never gets old. I don't give a shit about your feelings towards Integrity/hardcore music in general, if this album doesn't make you want to run through your house and beat everyone down to the floor then maybe you should flip that Rush record over to side B and lock the door you fucking pussy.

Robots and Empire are a relatively new band I discovered about a year ago, and then forgot about. Recently after restoring my my shitty ipod I was lucky enough to stumble on upon the "lost" files, and promptly gave myself a good slap in the face for letting this band fall off of my musical radar. Omnivore was the bands last full length put out back in '07, and probably my favorite release from them. Imagine if Quicksand and the Melvins fucked, and the resulting offspring was really into Deftones.
